THE TAO OF COOKIE
My friend Jack is an old-school hippie who enjoys hash, the Grateful Dead, meditation, LSD and fine baked goods. For a profoundly laid-back guy, he has very refined tastes... and a deep scorn for any culinary confection that's not up to his standards. I accompanied him on a quest for L.A.'s best chocolate chip cookie, sampling some highly regarded offerings, most of which suffered blistering putdowns. If "The Dude" from The Big Lebowski was a food critic, he might sound like my friend Jack.
