ON STAGE WITH THE L.A. PHILHARMONIC
What does playing in the Los Angeles Philharmonic sound like, to the musicians themselves? I had the chance to sit in with the orchestra during a rehearsal and explore some of the dynamics of performing at Walt Disney Concert Hall.
To record the various audio perspectives for this story, I moved around the stage during the rehearsal using two microphones: a generalized X/Y stereo mic and a tightly focused shotgun. I set up another digital recorder out in the audience seating, and had a third one feeding from Disney Hall's overhead recording system. And then I did interviews. So I had a LOT of tape to work with, argh. But I was happy with how the piece turned out.
